Meet us at Sunset
Project type
Wedding
Location
Thessaloniki
There is something beautifully precise about choosing a moment you cannot delay. You can move countries. Change homes. Cross half the world and begin again somewhere else. The sun remains spectacularly unimpressed by your plans. It also has very little interest in borders.
Daisy is Greek. Hugo is from New Zealand. They met in England, and their wedding brought together people from different countries, languages and different parts of their lives. We wanted to give them something they already had in common.
Meet Us at Sunset.
The ceremony was timed to end at 20:20, just as the sun began to set. From there, everyone moved into cocktail hour together. For a few minutes, the sunset became the event. The same warmth, the same horizon, shared by people who had arrived there from very different parts of the world.
The design followed its lead. The sea and sky already gave us blue, the surrounding nature gave us green, and terracotta introduced warmth between the two. Instead of competing with the landscape, we worked through its undertones, allowing the contrasts to remain soft and the background to stay present.
The tropical vegetation came from somewhere more personal. For two people with exceptionally busy lives, home was remarkably calm. Simple, warm and filled with tropical plants. Bird-of-paradise, anthuriums and long greens appeared to grow directly from the ground beside the sea, bringing something recognisably theirs into the landscape without turning it into a theme.
We could choose what grew from the ground, how colour sat against the sea and exactly when the ceremony would end. The sunset was the one thing nobody there had designed.
They had simply come from all over the world to watch it together.
